Abstract

Purpose: This study was conducted to compare sleep habits and sleep disorder between institutionalized elderly and community dwelling elderly in G city.

Method: The subjects of this study consisted of 278 Korean elderly over 65 years. The data was analyzed by the SPSS(ver.12.0) computer program, and it included descriptive statistics, ¥ö2-test, and t-test.

Result: 1) The institutionalized elderly had significantly higher score in 'Time to fall a sleep¡¯ than community dwelling elderly. There was statistically significant differences in ¡®Bedtime¡¯(p=.000), ¡®Time to fall a sleep¡¯(p=.000), ¡®Awaken time¡¯(p=.014), and ¡®Level of daytime sleepiness¡¯(p=.012) between institutionalized elderly and community dwelling elderly. 2) Both of them in evaluation of sleep disorder ware belong to sleep disorder group at a high rate. There was statistically significant differences in ¡® Trouble falling asleep¡¯(p=.003), and 'Number of trouble falling a sleep'(p=.004) between institutionalized elderly and community dwelling elderly.

Conclusion: This study showed that development of sleep intervention program according to living form need to settle sleep problems in nursing care setting for elderly.
